Edradour single malt straight from the cask 10 y.o. Marsala finish
The smallest distillery in Scotland, located in Highland region. Only three men are involved in the manufacturing process, as one of them is the distillery manager. Distillery’s output is 12 barrels per week. This is its current state. But what about the past?
The distillery was established in 1825, when neither the author of the article, nor its readers were born. Unless some of us is called Duncan MacLeod. 🙂 Originally was called „Glenforres“ but was renamed „Edradour“ a decade later /sounds like a character from „Lord of the Rings“, right?/. Since it has been acquired by new owners, the name was changed again – this time „Glenforres-Glenlivet“. Years later the distillery changed its owners once again and so the products reach us under the name „Edradour“, which name originates from Scottish Gaelic and means „between two rivers“.Before to present my annotation I have to mention something about the bottle’s exterior. As you can see, it came to me in this wonderful wooden box. I was pleasantly impressed by the fact it is handmade. Its nails and not so „perfect“ appearance are visible. Exactly what I liked. There is absence of that well-known feeling for poorly contrived factory package, which becomes more widespread with the products that flood us. The bottle /it is „only“ 0.500 ml., with an alcoholic strength of 57.6%/ is also sympathetic. Reminds me of an old pharmacy bottle. Now it’s time to check my notes and start.
Color – judge for yourself. The aroma without water is strong, fruity, liqueur with vanilla hints. After a few drops of water /the whiskey allows a little more water, because of its high alcohol content/ opens up the aroma of caramel, light wood, creating the impression for a pleasant „perfume“ with prevailing spices and ingredients of confectionery cuisine /probably due to its maturation in sweet Marsala Wine/. The taste without water is expectedly strong with prominent spicy malt, liqueur notes and a slight reminiscence of the wine from the used cask. After adding wate the malt taste became tangible. The finish is long, sweetish with pleasant stinging feeling on the tongue and slightly perceptible oiliness. After addition of water I caught lactic chewy candy and raisins.
