Elijah Craig 12y straight bourbon
Elijah Craig is a high quality bourbon produced by the Heaven Hill Distillery. It’s named after Reverend Elijah Craig, who was a Baptist preacher. But this is not, what he was famous for – the priest had the habit to produce alcohol from corn and to to store it in oak barrels. It so happened that, the room in which the alcohol and barrels were stored bursted into fire, and not to waste the material, Craig has decided to use the already charred barrels.
Then he found that the storage of bourbon in charred barrels gives it specific characteristics, wherefore he turned this method of maturation in tendency, which later became adopted by others too.
To be honest, I’ve been yearning to meet the „Preacher“ for a long time and with thrill in the hands and thirst, I stepped forward to this tasting. The color is coppery, even rusty, why not amber. The aroma is warming, by no means stinging, despite the alcoholic strength – 47%. The nose is rich and expressive, with strongly expressed sweetness and vanilla hue, also with perceptible scent of caramelized sugar and wood. The taste is balanced and creamy. Strongly expressed touch of sweet, which is superimposed in the throat and nose with every next sip. Also can be felt and a dose of piquancy, which I attach to the presence of rye. The aftertaste is of medium length, buttery / as homemade cake with butter / and sweet, as it leaves the impression of lightly smoked wood. Assessment: between 5 and 5.5… I give 5.3 / 6. I definitely liked it. Craig can be found at a price of 54-56 lv.
P.S. I forgot to mention that Elijah Craig is „straight bourbon“ i.e. its color is only due to the aging in oak barrels, without using additional colorings /Е150/, as those used in the blend of Chivas Regal. I suggest you to make a comparison between them on the photo. 🙂
