The Glenlivet 15y single malt whisky
The Glenlivet is well-known brand. Its name derives from the ancient Gaelic language, and literally translated means „valley of the smooth-flowing one“. If I’m wrong with the translation, please don’t blame me, I was just a little kid when I last spoke Gaelic. 🙂 Some others relate the origin of the name with the River Livet.
The founder of the distillery is considered to be George Smith, who was tough and gnarly Scot. Through the years about and after the establishment of the distillery, there have been introduced heavy financial taxes on the whiskey / I guess, on the fault of the British…/. And many manufacturers have decided to produce their whiskey illegally. Mr. Smith, however, has been a perfectionist and he loved his work, so as a perspicacious businessman, in spite of the status quo, he had obtained legal license to produce this elixir. He began to pay his taxes and to produce totally legal and quality whiskey. This earned him both, the admiration and hatred of the impure competitors. Mr. Smith decided to oppose and grabbed two pistols, which he repeatedly used against the assailants. He passed away in 1871. but his legacy lived on in his son John Smith, who continued and developed the business. Many people had tried to copy the already famous brand, which made it necessary the brand to be related with Smith family, which acquired the right to use it for designation of their products. In the 20th century, occurred hard but also blessed years. The crisis has forced much of the Speyside distilleries to close the doors, but Glenlivet has withstood the difficulties. Not only that, but after the removal of Prohibition in US, the brand made a breakthrough on the market. Initially through whiskey miniatures, distributed by Pullman railway company. At the end of 50s, Glenlivet became a leading product on the US market, providing half the Scotch that has been traded there.
After the prolonged introduction, came time for my impressions. The color is dark gold. The aroma is warming, but not too strong. The adding of few drops of water unlocks sweet and toasted aroma, combining the scent of wood. The taste is complex and balanced, spicy and sweet, with hints of honey, nuts and dried fruits. The aftertaste is of medium length. Brings dryness and notes of toasted. The finish combines and a shade of fruit jam and vague recollection of chili pepper.
