Connemara peated whiskey cask strength
I opened the „magical cupboard“ and what to see – three samples of Connemara peated Irish whiskey standing bored in the corner. I decided to do some work / i.e enjoyment/ and grabbed one. However, I choose the one with a higher alcohol content – 57,9% or in other words „cask strength“. The weather was also conducive to it – snow and cold are the perfect prerequisite for tasting whiskey with more „power“, in this case and with peaty aroma and taste notes.
Connemara is produced by the Cooley Distillery, an Irish whiskey distillery named after a historic area in Ireland. Its distinctive feature is the fact that it is double-distilled and they have their malt dried over a fire ignited by dry peat layer, yielding the special aroma and flavor. This particular whiskey has no age statement, but I came across the information that it contains 4, 6 and 8-year-old distillates, and unlike the standard Connemara, which I reviewed last year and will re-taste soon, it is with the alcoholic strength as in the cask. Now essentially.
Aroma – peat, but not so intense. In this respect, pales in comparison to Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Talisker and other smoky „Scots“. Caramel, citrus, fruits, honey, nutmeg and black pepper, homemade cookies, tobacco, light grassy notes, vanilla. The addition of water is highly recommended /unless you want to paralyze your receptors from the high alcohol content/. I added a lot of drops, until the drink became suitable for consumption. The „nose“ became more fruity, with notes of sweet creme /Brulee/. Taste – thick, dense /as strange as it sounds/, spicy, peaty, but somehow bearable and pleasant, malty sweetness and dried fruits. Finish – medium in length, sweetish, peppery, expectedly peaty, memory of dried fruits /raisins/ and slightly vinous feeling.
I don’t know if it is available in Bulgaria except in the set of miniatures. In foreign sites the price of Connemara Peated whiskey cask strength is around 50 €.
