Mortlach 9 y.o. single malt whisky
Let`s continue with the reviews dedicated to single malt whiskies from Scotland. Once in the previous article I introduced you my impressions of Glendronach 12 y.o., now I’ll present you another prominent „Scot“ – Mortlach 9 y.o. single malt, 46%, bottled by Douglas Laing and being part from its Provenance range.
Mortlach distillery is located in the heartland of Speyside whisky region – Dufftown, and holds the honour of being the first legal distillery in the region. It was founded in 1823 by James Findlater and a year later, Donald Macintosh and Alexander Gordon joined him in ownership. It was later acquired by John and James Grant, which dismantling it /as rude as it sounds/ and diverted its equipment for use in another their distillery – Glen Grant distillery. After achieving their aim sold it to John Gordon, who used it as a brewery. He renovated it and then sold it. In 1923 was purchased by John Walker and Sons, and later became part of the Diageo’s portfolio, which continues and to this day. At present, the main production is targeted to meet the needs of malt distillate in the production of Johnnie Walker, but single malt whisky like the present is also maintained as market availability.Once again I got a sample of the whisky, for which I have to thank to the people of Masterpiece. As I mentioned sample, I remembered to share the already traditional part of the reviews – its photo.
Aroma: strong, lightly peated. At the same time sweet, smoky and spicy. Vinous – I caught raisins and pear, caramel and the expected malt. After addition of water the scent becomes even more sweet, fruity and the smoky presence is unlocked. The taste is expressive, slightly oily, highly spicy, acerb, dense, malt and honey. The water intensifies the bitterness. The finish is long, slightly smoky, peppery and sweet.
Assessment: 85/ 100.
