Penderyn Madeira cask finish single malt whisky
New week – new whisky in the glass, and later in the virtual pages on the blog. Hello, maltmates – it’s time to introduce you to another whisky, which I managed to seduce and got pretty close with. It is single malt with an alcohol content of 46% abv and comes from .. Scotland – Wales, actually. Yep, Wales can boast with the production of delicious whisky and after my previous meeting with product of Penderyn distillery, I can be sure of that.
In the jubilee article № 100, I introduced you to Penderyn Portwood finish single malt whisky, which I found a great pre-Christmas „yumminess“ /you can find details on the link or in the related posts after the final lines of this article/.
„Penderyn distillery is owned by the Welsh Whisky Company, founded in 2000. The distillery itself opened doors on 1st March 2004 in the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales /fond of Laphroaig, too/. The history says that Wales would have distilled whisky more than a century ago, but the industry began to decline in the late 19th century. Besides sherry casks, Penderyn also use bourbon barrels from Evan Williams, as well as from Jack Daniel’s. The range is still expanding and уou can come across whisky with Madeira finish, as well as peated distillates and whisky, which spent years in sherry casks /butts?/. Another interesting kind is the so called „Red flag“, dedicated to the Welsh around the world and the Welsh patriotic struggles. In fact, the company produces not only whisky, but also gin, vodka and liqueur.“
This is the information, that I shared with you in the previous post and since there have been no significant changes in the distillery’s history, so I reproduced the already written. I think it’s not unnecessary – if not for you, at least for me, since I learned how to use the “quote text” function in Blogger. But enough revelations – let’s talk about the whisky itself.
I mentioned that it has an alcohol content of 46% /there is another variation similar of it, but it looks different and has an alcohol content of 41% abv/, but I don’t know whether it is chill filtered and whether it is natural colored. After an initial period of aging in American oak /I guess/, the distillate is finished in Madeira casks. There is no age statement on the label, but it can’t be of „advanced age“ – after all the distillery opened its doors about ten years ago. And if I haven’t kindled your interest so far, let me tell you about the whisky on the language of associations.
Aroma – fresh and fruity – apricots, cherries and strawberries, soaked in alcohol, nuts, honey, buttery, raisins, cream with fresh fruits, slightly alcoholic. Later appeared a hint of red fruits, such as blackcurrant and cranberries. Perfume, distant memory of rye whiskey, multivitamin fruit juice, dark fruit notes, resulting from the Madeira cask finish. Later and camomile tea, spices – black pepper and a trace of green spices. The profile of the whisky, I would define as a strong and intensive, even „juvenile“. Minutes later appeared a strong reminder of grapes and yellow apples, pineapple and milk chocolate, cake with fruit cream. With water – fresh green notes and more fresh fruits. Taste – sweet, strongly fruity – imagine a mixture of citrus fruits, dried fruits and fruity flavored gummy bears, buttery and lots of fruit candies /almost like the air freshening sprays/. Initially there was no spiciness and bitterness, but I caught something I really like – a memory of grape juice /stum/. Anyone, that has ever made wine or was hanging around the wine cask happily sipping from the mug /like me/, will understand me. I caught and hints of Coke in the distance. After the second sip sweetness strengthened and the piquancy showed very slight ambitiousness. The whisky, however, remained predominantly fruity, sweet and gentle /in my mind emerged the reminiscence of white Port wine, like Graham`s white port which i adore/, as it manages to unleash the salivation. I caught hints of peaches, too. With water – even more gentle, sweet and fresh fruit, peach-vanilla, with a hint of vanilla ice cream, and a little later appeared fresh minty note. Finish – medium in length, honey, fruits, a hint of grape juice again, sweetness, buttery, lack of piquancy, multivitamin fruit juice. Also appeared and a glimpse of ginger, only to disappear and not to disprove my statement for lack of piquancy. It left a memory of white wine /white Port as i mentioned/, and after the second sip for a fruit chewing gum /pink Orbit gum/. With water – intensifying notes of grapes, dried fruits – raisins and apricots. More Port. Assessment: 88/100. Price: around 100 lv.
In summary: a wonderful fruit-driven and gentle whisky, which I’ll have again and i`m considering buying a bottle of it anytime soon.
