Glenmorangie Dornoch single malt whisky
At the end of last week I had the opportunity to travel to Sofia, where I found the most recent „special“ bottle of Glenmorangie, bearing the name „Dornoch“. Just like a large part of whiskey producers, Glenmorangie also regularly launch new distillates on the market, inspired by an event or person, and after add them a shiny appearance and string together the story of the batch with a specific occasion, they release them either as a part of limited edition, or as in the case, in duty-free shops at the airports.
Dornoch belongs to the second group and you can find it exactly at some airports before flight. What is the story about it? The whisky is named after a beautiful estuary, near which the distillery itself is located, and to magnify it even more people from Glenmorangie named the distillate this way. Furthermore, part of the value of each bottle is given as donation to the Marine Conservation Society for the Protection of the Dornoch Firth. The whisky itself contains artificial coloring, it has no age statement and is chill filtered. Initially matured in ex-bourbon barrels, then extra matured in ex-Amontillado sherry casks. It is bottled at 43% ABV. And since I have already repeatedly wrote about the history of the brand, I’ll proceed with my notes.
Aroma – honey, acetone, strong sweetness, spicy, notes of bourbon, cotton candy, caramel, jam/ marmalade, caramelized dried fruits/ citrus, fruit puree. Taste – peppery-sweet, mild dryness, dried fruits, „motes“ of peat /i.e. not so strongly pronounced, but tangible/, honey. Finish – strong sweetness, fruits, vanilla, buttery and pepperness. After addition of water the aroma opens up and intensifies roasted caramelized fruits. The taste with water reminded grapes, sweetness again, as in cotton candy or hard candies, sweetness and liquorness. The finish, influenced by water, brought dried apricots, light bitterness, which gave way to the sweetness, which on the other hand dominates the appearance of the whisky in its three components, a hint of banana and more spiciness.
