Aberfeldy 12 y.o. single malt whisky
At the base of each blend whisky stands one or more single malt distillates. Of course, the grain distillate prevails in the blended whiskies, but the malt is exactly what gives them a more finished and refined appearance. The situation is similar with the Dewar’s blend, which I presented previously. Its base is precisely the Aberfeldy malt whisky. This is noted on the label of Aberfeldy 12 y.o.
Aberfeldy Distillery, as well as that of Dewar`s, is owned by Bacardi. But it has not always been so. Aberfeldy was founded by the company of the Dewar family in 1896, but production began two years later. Located near the eponymous town, and accidental or not – of about 3 km. from the birthplace of the founder of the brand – John Dewar. The period between founding of the distillery and World War I was successful for Dewar`s/ Aberfeldy. The years of war led to cessation of its activities. The same applies to the World War II period. Thereafter, Dewar`s takes forefront on the US market, which requires capacity expansion of Aberfeldy. Of the millions of liters of alcohol produced, almost everything is used for the Dewar’s blends, and significantly less amount reaches the market in the form of single malt whisky. Besides the 12-year-old, on the market can be found and 21-year-old Aberfeldy. I think there is no official import of it in Bulgaria /edited on 12.06.2015., but it can be found at a price of around 130 lv/. The 12-year-old costs around 60 lv. At the airports can be found and Aberfeldy 18 y.o. single malt whisky, but its price is insane. I had heard nice things about the 12 y.o., so I decided to present it to you.
Aroma – smoked pears, dried fruits, apricots, sweetness, caramel, fruit liqueur and walnuts. Taste – dry, dried fruits, honey, very light peat, sweetness, slight „tickling“ on the tongue, light woodiness, exotic fruit /pineapple, mango/. Finish – medium, sweetness and buttery. The sweetness gradually increases, and remains long after the last sip. Slight smokiness. Assessment: 85,5/100
In summary: fruity, sweet and slightly smoky whisky /barely perceptible indeed/, which is quite drinkable and pleasant. I liked it.
