Glendronach 18 y.o. single malt whisky
My trip to Bucharest filled me with pleasant pre-Christmas emotions. Cool people, nice weather and unknown city – what else do we need to be a little more smiling and happier? Maybe a sip or two of delicious whiskey, which to taste with the mentioned cool people. This is Glendronach 18 y.o. single malt.
I already presented you the Glendronach 12 year old in the blog. You can read the review and some facts about the brand by following the link above. I won’t bore you with more details about the distillery. The whisky which I tried is named after the founder of the brand – James Allardice. This same Allardice, who visited Edinburgh to promote the whisky and having spoken to not one or two traders, realized that his efforts will remain futile, since his offer was diverted everywhere. So Mr. Allardice headed to his hotel. On the way he was met by several “ ladies of the night“ who wanted him to take them for a drink. Allardice offered his own whisky and after many sips, his companions spreaded the rumor for the qualitative drink, which he offers. And so the brand gained its first fans. Thank god, I didn’t need the needs of the workers like these in the story, to be able to taste this yummy. Being in St. Patrick Irish Pub, I knew I was in the right place and having tasted Balblair 23 Year Old, I headed to Glendronach 18 Year Old. From the pictures you can see the saturated color which the drink offers. It is aged in Oloroso Sherry casks, but I’m not sure whether the color is not enhanced with caramel. It doesn’t matter to me.
The aroma is something I give greater importance. In this case it is strongly influenced by the sherry, with hints of maple syrup, dried dark fruits, vanilla, raisins and a dose of spiciness. With water I caught dried plums. The taste is spicy, sherry, slightly buttery, Madeira notes, Christmas cake and raisins. With water stood out the sherry, vanilla and appeared a pleasant sweetness. Finish – medium length, butter cake, citrus, sweetness, slightly toasted, acerbic. With water appeared morello cherry notes and a light touch of peat.
Assessment: 89-90.
I couldn’t enjoy it fully, because around me appeared cigarette smoke, but from my brief meeting with „Allardice“ I can conclude that this whisky contains the „wow“ element and I strongly recommend it. Price: between 160 – 180 lv.
