Four roses small batch bourbon
So far in the „American“ week – I`ve met with Mellow corn straight corn whiskey and Jefferson`s small batch bourbon. Reasonably or not, the time came to give ourselves to the fruit of one love. And as this sounds rather vague and misleading, I immediately specify – I’m talking about the Four roses bourbon brand of whose logo I already wrote in the article dedicated to the Four roses single barrel bourbon /you can find it with just one click on the link/.
On the same link you can also find and the love story that initiated the graphical representation of the brand, so I will not repeat myself. A few brief words about the brand. The company was established in 1888 by Paul L. Jones, Jr. It is assumed that he had distilled bourbon and before this year, but he registered the brand Four roses a few years after he moved its facilities in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1922, his company was acquired by Frankfort Distilling Company, one of a handful of companies legally permitted to distil for medicinal purposes during Prohibition. In 1943 it was acquired by Seagram, which inexplicably to many, ceased the spreading of the bourbon to the US /despite its popularity/ and focussed its attention on the rapidly expanding Asian and European markets. Some suggest that this move was prompted by the desire of Seagram to sell blended whiskey in the US market. The bourbon was very well received in Japan, and that’s why in 2002 the Japanese Kirin Brewery Company acquired the Four roses brand, as large part of the company’s portfolio is available exclusively on the territory of Japan. I think I already gained a clearer view of the past and present of the brand, therefore I proceed substantially.
I set the beginning of my annotation with the notes of aroma. The same is very pleasant. Raisins, vanilla, slight acetone, spicy, cherry, swedish, hint of „dill“, caramel and oak. The liquid is with 45% alcohol content and I added a little water. The delicious scent of baked apples with cinnamon stood out clearly. Taste – expressive and peppery, ginger, cherry liqueur, woody, drunken cherries as with water stood out and the sweetness. The finish is medium to long. Cherry jam, buttery, baked cake, liqueur, sweetness.
Assessment: 89/100. It justified my expectations and I would taste it again in time.
