The trace of the buffalo – Buffalo Trace straight bourbon
Vast plains and herds of buffaloes/ bisons grazing freely, undisturbed by human presence. So was once. Now is different. Except in the nature buffaloes can be found and elsewhere – this place is Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. That same Kentucky, where the good-quality bourbon is born.
The distillery has been known by several names, one of which is George T. Stagg. Today, one of the premium positioned distillates of the company is produced under that name, and I hope ever to get in my hands on it. The distillery is continuously operating since its establishment in the 19th century, as an active part in it took Harrison Blanton /whose last name denotes one of the best bourbon of the company, about which you can read in the next review/ and this makes it popular tourist destination among American historical places. So as to finish the historical preview I will mention that the distillery has been producing whiskey even during the Prohibition for „medicinal purposes“.The company produces a range of whiskies, including „Buffalo trace“, „Eagle Rare“, „Blanton’s“ /which will keep me company in the next review/ „George T. Stagg“ and „Van Winkle“, which is one of the rarest types of bourbon sold instantaneously on high prices, as the annual production is about 7000 bottles, which I guess are previously allocated. So if you want to surprise me for my birthday, you know what to be. :)And now about „Buffalo trace“.
What impressed me? Firstly – the bottle, partially and the label. It looks like a piece of torn paper and creates a pleasant feeling. Next – the alcoholic strength, which here is 40%. And last but not least the price – I managed to find it for 42 lv., which is a good deal compared with its general price in Bulgaria. What is the color? Golden /a shade of the precious metal/. I attach and photo for information.Aroma. It is strong but not intrusive and doesn’t require twisting of the head or wiping tears. From the beginning I caught liqueur scent /maybe cherry/ and light acetone. Woody oak notes mixed with a pleasant sweetness were also tangible. The taste was what surprised me. Feels a little „dry“ /I call it “leap into the unknown depth”/. I expected more strongly manifested sweetness, but it was almost missing. It is also perceptible and a touch of spiciness, but that’s far weaker than the representatives of Wild Turkey. Maybe its „dry“ flavor, which is also detectable in the Scotch whiskies matured in Oloroso sherry casks, and the lack of inherent bourbon sweetness, makes part of the single malt admirers to evaluate it higher and to prefer it to the other bourbon. Strongly pronounced is and the woody taste. The aftertaste is of medium length. It appears and a slight „oiliness“, and again the already mentioned wood. I caught a slight vanilla and a hint of corn. On the whole, „Buffalo trace“ is a nice bourbon. However, I was missing something to spin my head, not counting the commented „woody“ beginning. Nonetheless, I should mention that it is palatable, echoing pleasantly.
