Springbank 10 y.o. single malt whisky
Every beginning and each initiative has an end. Here came to its end the sequence of reviews for whiskey of „Springbank“ distillery. Of course, by „end“ I mean temporary separation and hope soon to have something for you from Campbeltown.Thus far, I was lucky to present you Hazelburn 12 y.o. single malt whisky and Springbank 12 y.o. single malt whisky calvados & bourbon cask. In this article I will present you my impressions of Springbank 10 y.o. single malt whisky. Before the words I offer you a few photos confirming the already written in the previous articles about the products of the distillery, namely concerning its ownership and the lack of chill-filtration of the whiskey. The color of this particular whiskey, as you can see for yourself in the photos is nothing but result of the natural „chemistry and love“ that flows between the distillate and barrel-host. In other words, there is no additional coloring with caramel /Е150/.
The whiskey has a pleasant gold color with notes of straw stalk. The aroma is slightly peaty with soft maritime notes which „fit“ perfectly here, sweetish. I felt scent of dried plums and prune plum marmalade, which I occasionally spread on my favourite pancakes. Perceptible is wine note, hint of crispy baked cake layers, as well as light liqueur nuance. With the addition of water the aroma becomes more fruity and sweetish. Taste – the whiskey seemed to me dry and mellow despite its high alcohol content. However, I admit that I couldn’t unriddle its taste in details. It seemed to me slightly „loose“ and non-conforming to its scent. The addition of water reasonably lowers the alcohol content and the whiskey becomes even more drinkable, but also and more „loose“. The finish also didn’t impress me much – relatively short, bearing the already mentioned peaty flavor, but not in a such „cheeky“ way as would have been presented by an „island“ fighter. In summary, I can say that the aroma is very enjoyable creating anticipation for the taste qualities of the liquid, which are not covered by its taste and aftertaste. The potential remains underdeveloped.
And to finish the topic, I’ll mention that this and the next few reviews won’t contain my assessment. I’ll replace the current evaluation system with established one on the scale 1-100, as in a special publication will explain its peculiarities in details.
