Hellyers road original single malt whisky
So … I don’t know how to start. Not because I don’t know what to write about the whisky, but just because I’m not sure how to present it to you. Briefly, this whisky comes from Tasmania. Yes, that Tasmania, which is located across the world, and from where, according to the popular movie from years ago, comes „Taz“ the Tasmanian Devil. „But, do Australians make whiskey?“ They do, and not just whiskey, but the best single malt of 2014, officially pronounced as such on the competition conducted months ago. I think it was „Sullivans cove“, which qualities must have been impressive for the reputable jury, so as to be placed foremost before the Scottish, Irish and Japanese whiskies /reviews of two famous Japanese whiskies coming soon/. But enough lyrical deviations.
Hellyers road single malt whisky derives from the eponymous distillery, named after the famous in some parts of the world, Henry Hellyer. Hellyer was an English surveyor and architect, who had the responsible task to explore Tasmania and to make maps of the area. I won’t bore you with Hellyer’s life, but obviously he did something significant, as the distillery bears his name. Now about the whisky. I’ve got a sample again. What impressed me? The color. Compared with the latest dark /in some cases due to the coloring agent E 150/ distillates, this one seems almost like water. This, however, does not have to mislead us. The liquid is 46.2%, non-chill filtered, bottled without the mentioned coloring agent.
Aroma. Wonderful. This at the beginning. It really is very nice, strongly fruity. Imagine the smell of mashed plums, apricots, apples and pears. I felt light tobacco notes, faint smell of leather, slight spiciness and bitterness, raisins, creme brulee. The whisky allows few drops of water, then unleashes an odor of exotic fruits and the aroma becomes even more beautiful. Taste. Pleasantly spicy, peppery, honey, light bitterness, raisins again, but this time soaked in honey and buttery. The water helps to unlock and slight sweetness, vanilla and light wood flavor. The finish is long, honey, raisins are felt again, light cream which reminded me of delicious homemade creme caramel. Exactly this creamy remembrance, as well as the sense for delicious plums, became notable after adding water.
Assessment: 90/100.
A truly complex whisky, which I recommend. Unfortunately, the whisky can’t be found in the stores and you can find it only in some of the specialized whiskey bars, from where I got my sample too. 🙂
