Glenfiddich 19 y.o. Madeira Cask single malt whisky
The company, that is holding about 20% of the whiskey market – that’s where the next whiskey I will present you comes from. It is Glenfiddich 19 y.o. Madeira Cask single malt whisky, which belongs to the so-called „Age of Discovery“ series, dedicated to the great Portuguese explorers of the 15th century, which have paved a road to the exotic Asian horizons. The series two more 19-year-old distillates – Age of Discovery Bourbon Cask Reserve /fully aged in bourbon barrels/ and Age of Discovery Red wine finish /aged in red wine casks from South America – Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon/.
What I tried at the Whiskey Fest 2014 was liquid with Madeira finish, which is initially matured in American oak casks /ex-bourbon probably/ and European oak casks used to mature Sherry, I guess. From my experience with Glenfiddich Master`s Edition, which I liked, I judged that this whisky will offer something interesting. So, without wasting unnecessary time, I offer you my experience, materialized in the respective notes.
Aroma – dried fruits /I liken it to Sherry, since Madeira and Sherry seem to me to be similar in flavour to some extent/, woody note, piquancy, vanilla, light cherries, honey, raisins, plums, toasted fruit cake. A few drops of water strengthened the dried fruit note. Taste – sweet, woody, slightly toasted, honey, liqueury, „earthy“ note /I call it soil/. With water became peppery, and simultaneously increased the woody note and sweetness. Finish – medium in length, light bitterness replaced by plum jam, dried fruits /raisins and a dose of apricots/, slightly buttery. The water unlocked strong sweetness, buttery layer for cake and dried fruits soaked in alcohol. Assessment: 86/100.
In summary – an interesting whisky with pronounced sweetness, woody presence and aroma/ taste of „earth“ /do not understand it as peat or something bad/. It failed to grab me fully. Maybe, when I repeat it after some time, I’ll add something to my annotation or I will discover hidden charm. If you want to taste it, prepare a solid sum – it costs around 200 lv.The other representatives of the line Age of Discovery are not available in Bulgaria, for now.
