Hudson Four grain bourbon
It is widely believed that the bourbon, as a distinctive American drink, should come from Kentucky according to legal regulation. In fact, the American legal regulation does not introduce such a requirement. According to American legislation, „Bourbon“ is a spirit drink with minimum alcoholic strength of 40%, resulting from the distillation of a mash whose content includes between 51% and 79% corn, complemented by rye, wheat and barley, which must be always aged in new, charred oak barrels, that the economic interests have imposed be made from American white oak from Kentucky. There are other requirements, but they concern the alcohol concentration in distilling and filling in barrels. This bourbon Hudson Four grain comes from New York.
It is often advertised as the first legally produced bourbon in the state after Prohibition. Produced by Tuthilltown distillery founded in 2001, if I am not mistaken, that is relatively small distillery, as it employs only a few people. The whiskey distilled there, is aged in small casks, which helps to speed up maturation. So, a product, spent relatively short period of about 6 months in the casks, is marketed with desire to compete beverages from Texas, Chicago and Kentucky. Each bottle is hand-numbered, as the cap again is hand-sealed with beautiful wax, as the technology is well-known from Maker’s Mark bourbon. In these lines I’ll present you one of the products of Tuthilltown, the composition of which includes except mandatory corn and rye, also wheat and malted barley. What about its taste qualities? Is it possible such a young bourbon to compete with „the big brothers“, spent at least 2 years in process of aging?
Aroma – sweet fruit syrup, woody note, liqueur, honey, herbal tea, camomile tea, notes of „glue“, ginger and slight black pepper, rye /I caught similar scent in Old Overholt rye whiskey/, caramel, maybe and little cinnamon. Taste – spicy, cherries, note of „cupboard“, sweetness, slightly buttery, weak bitterness. Strong woody note. Finish – medium in length, slightly dry at first, then appeared and weak buttery note. Gradually highlighted and sweetness, coffee and honey. Assessment: 84/100
