Dalmore 18 y.o.& Dalmore 12 y.o. single malt whisky
1. Dalmore 18 y.o. single malt whisky
After the wonderful memories that Dalmore 15 y.o. single malt whisky left me, I was impatient to touch the other members of the Dalmore family which can be found on our market. By these I don’t mean the distillates from Dalmore Constellation line which are not only quite rare but also and quite expensive. In this and the following article I will present you Dalmore 12 y.o., Dalmore 18 y.o. , Dalmore cigar malt and Dalmore King Alexander single malt whisky, which I had the good fortune to taste on the occasion of the Whiskey Fest 2014.I will start my notes with Dalmore 18 y.o. single malt. Perhaps, it is logical to set the beginning with the review of Dalmore 12 y.o., but its time will come soon. Now about the 18-year-old. The first 14 years of its life Dalmore 18 spent in ex-bourbon casks, the whisky is then transferred to 30 year old Matusalem Oloroso Sherry wood for a further four years. That’s what I learned during the Dalmore masterclass. What I learned from the whisky itself?
Aroma. Leather, maple syrup, prunes, ginger /pepperness/, slight salty aroma /smell of the sea, not peat/, raisins, baked cake layer, sherry, caramel, creme brulee, dark fruits. Taste – sweetish, spicy, slightly smoky /not peaty again, rather scorched/, leather, woody note, yummy cream. Finish – medium length, sweetness, which gradually strengthens, dried fruits /dark forest fruits and prunes/, slight honey, yellow pear, toffees butterscotch, that leave and slightly salty aftertaste.
Assessment: 89/100. I like it, but my favourite so far is 15-year-old distillate.
2. Dalmore 12 y.o. single malt whisky
Dalmore 12 y.o. single malt whisky is aged for the first nine years in ex-bourbon casks, before the half of the distillate is transferred to 30 year old Matusalem Oloroso Sherry casks and the rest of it continues its maturation in bourbon casks.
Aroma – pleasant, raisins, vanilla, apples, chocolate, plums, dried fruits. Taste – peppery, nutmeg, woody, toasted, sweetish. Finish – medium length, dried fruits, sweetness, caramel.
Assessment: 87/100.
In summary: we were presented wonderful distillates, but Dalmore 15 y.o. single malt with its complexity and character, pleased me more than the reviewed in this article.
