It came to my mind that this stanza from a William Blake’s poem would have suited for the beginning of an article in which i will present you a royalty – Dalmore King Alexander single malt whisky.
But first things first. I will start the review with the whisky whose purpose is to accompany a fine cigar – Dalmore cigar malt.
I do not understand a thing of cigars, so please excuse me for not going to accompany the drink with a cigar. This single malt was originally positioned in the lower price range of Dalmore, as its value varied between that of Dalmore 12 and Dalmore 15 y.o. A few years ago the company changed its policy and by increasing its age, the distillate become positioned over the 15-year-old Dalmore and its current price in Bulgaria is about 130 lv. The liquid matures in ex-bourbon casks, 30 year old Matusalem oloroso sherry butts and Cabernet Sauvignon wine barrels /if I can trust the unverified information from the Internet/. If I ever visit the distillery, I’ll check it by myself! The main person behind this whisky is Richard Paterson, who as cigar connoisseur himself, decided to please the cigar fans with this goody.
What happened with my review? First, my nose was not in good condition. Second, the sample turned out to be insufficient for me. That’s why I’m not satisfied with my notes. But enough excuses.
Aroma – woody, dried fruits, caramel, baked apples, peach and pear jam, maple syrup, caramelized apples and sherry notes. Taste – spicy, light honey, bitter, toasted and slightly dry. Finish – medium length, baked quinces and apples, light sweetness which appears a little later after the sip. Assessment: because of the above mentioned obstacles I’m not involved with assessment. In any case, it would be around 85-86/100.

And for the final of the reviews of whisky from the Dalmore distillery, I will offer you a sip or two of „The King“ – Dalmore King Alexander single malt whisky. Without an age statement. I guess that the distillate is predominantly over 18-20-year-old. What is more special is the palette of barrels used for the maturation of this whisky – to those of bourbon, Matusalem oloroso sherry and Cabernet Sauvignon we can add and Marsala, Port and Madeira casks. This suggests that the final product will be characterized by complexity. But to what extent does this combination and variety of aromas and flavors ensure success of the whisky – well, that’s a matter of individual judgement. I personally like this kind of maturation, but for some people it turns out to be a little too much and they would prefer something „more orthodox“.
Aroma. Pleasant, coffee, dark fruits /after a drop or two of water/ among which stand out wild strawberries and wild strawberry jam which, at least for me, is unique. Ginger, chocolate, moist cake, woody. Taste – dried fruits, raisins and peppery, and with the addition of water becomes sweeter and toasted, maple syrup notes. Finish – resolves pleasantly and slowly. Baked cake. chocolate and dark fruits, prunes and butter, which strengthened with the addition of water. Assessment: 88/100.
To sum up the written in the last two articles, I’ll say that the preliminary expectations I had about the profile of the distillate on the basis my experiences with Dalmore 15, were justified. Delicious and mellow whiskies with „bodies“ formed by fruity and chocolate notes. However, my personal favorite remains Dalmore 15 y.o. single malt, whose presence I enjoyed to the fullest extent. Right behind it I would place Dalmore 18 y.o. single malt whisky and King Alexander lll. If I decide to give whisky as a gift to close person, this would undoubtedly be the 15-year-old distillate. If the purpose of the gift is the whisky to be kept and valued for its appearance, I would choose King Alexander.
