Bulleit straight rye whiskey
The week began with cold weather. In addition to good old friend – the heating stove, I decided to warm myself with an interesting beverage coming from the US. I mean the rye whiskey Bulleit straight rye whiskey 45%. Some time ago I tasted Old Overholt rye whiskey, which seemed nice, and so I approached current drink with interest.
The Bulleit brand is associated with the name of Augustus Bulleit, who in the early 19th century was active as a bartender in Louisville, Kentucky. Not one or two batches of whiskey passed through his hands, and having started to mix them, he found the recipe which he considered as a guarantee to success. In his blends he used predominantly rye and less corn, which is not surprising, since in this period exactly the rye dominated among the American whiskey. Bulleit developed this activity until 1860, when he died. It is alleged that he went missing while transporting barrels of bourbon to New Orleans. Production was discontinued with his death. Barely after a century, the great-great-grandson of Augustus – Tom Bulleit, started the activity again, as Bulleit bourbon is distilled in the Four Roses distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. The rye whiskey is produced in „Midwest Grain Products“ distillery, in Indiana. The distillery does not offer its own whiskey. Production is sold to various brands, including Bulleit, Templeton, High West and George Dickel, which bottle and offer it as their own product. So, actually, the Bulleit whiskey, which I’m reviewing now, is a distillate of „MGP“ distillery. Although it is not indicated on the label, the whiskey is aged between 4 and 7 years and it is available at 45% alcohol by volume. Its price in Bulgaria is bellow 40 lv.
Now a few words about the qualities of the liquid. Aroma – the rye scent familiar from Old Overholt, woody note, cherries, drunken chocolate-covered cherries, liqueur, sweetness, ginger, slight chocolate note, vanilla, butter and caramel, which being enhanced after a few drops of water, as well as the cherries. Taste – peppery, menthol, cherry liqueur, buttery cake, sweetness and a note of „cupboard“. With water the notes of cherries and butter became stronger. Finish – medium in length, toasted buttery layered cake, sweetness, which intensifies, spiciness and woody note. The buttery note gradually reminded me of delicious pancakes. The drops of water enhanced the sweetness and notes of rye.

In conclusion: interesting whiskey with an excellent balance between price and quality.
