Ballantine`s 12 y.o. pure malt whisky
While I’m on a wave with products of Ballantine`s and Pernod Ricard, I’ll present you the result from my meeting with another representative of the brand – Ballantine`s 12 y.o. pure malt whisky. And if Ballantine`s 12 у.о. blended whisky, which I reviewed in the previous article /where you can find and facts about the history of the brand/ is a blend of grain and malt whisky, then this Ballantine`s pure malt is a blend of 40 malt distillates. At least so is claimed, and I have no doubt.
Introduced in 2000, this product has an indication of the age of 12 years. I suppose you know that the years on the label indicate exactly the age of the youngest whisky in the bottle. I came across information that it was intended for duty-free shops. Looking for details about the history of the drink, I came across the family motto of Ballantine`s – ‘A Friend to All’. Perhaps led by it, the people behind the whisky seek to create a product with pleasant taste, which would not be stunning, but in no way would have disgusted you. „The golden mean“ is achieved and without to impress with something enchanting, the distillate creates pleasant emotions, and I would recommend it to beginners whisky connoisseurs. The alcohol content is 40%. Chill filtered, E150 enhanced color, but considering the acceptable price of around 50-60 lv., it is expected. For this money you can find nice single malts, but this one is not bad too. If I am not mistaken, it is presented as premium blend, as are and some of the Johnnie Walker’s goodies. I couldn’t find information about the casks in which the components of the blend mature, but having in mind that the whisky gathers the spirit of different malts in itself, this is predictable result. I think some are aged in bourbon barrels, and others in sherry casks.
Aroma – fruity sweetness, raisins, apricots, plums, light citrus and hint of banana, also grassy note, weak peat, honey, vanilla, caramel, which gradually strengthens, woody smell, tobacco and light perfume. Taste – soft, slight pepperness, light peat, sweetness and vanilla. Finish – medium in length, sweetness, toasted notes, dried apricots, apples and peat, reminiscent the peaty presence in Scapa and Glen Grant to some extent.
