Scapa 14 y.o. single malt whisky
The Scapa distillery was founded in 1885 by John Townsend and Mr. MacFarlane. Later it was taken over by „Scapa Distillery company“, which went into liquidation in 1934 and the ownership passed into the hands of brothers Maurice & John Bloch, which owned a couple of other distilleries in Campbellton. Furthermore, they produced and the ‘Ambassador’ blend, for whose composition was targeted the malt from Scapa. In 1954 Scapa distillery was sold to Hiram Walker & Sons, which modernized the production capacity. The following decades brought new challenges for Scapa, which become a component of the Ballantine’s blend.
In 2005 the French giant Pernod Ricard, through their subsidiary company Chivas Brothers, become the new owners of Scapa, which was mothballed in the period from 1994 to 2004. Under the new leadership, the 14yo Scapa was replaced by the new at the time Scapa 16yo. I found my dose of rare malt in bar Emona, in Plovdiv, where was left about half a bottle of it, which I regret for not having bought.
As 12yo Scapa, so and 14 yo Scapa becomes increasingly difficult to be found. I got my few minutes of happiness by pouring out 50 ml, part of which I used for this review.
Aroma – spicy, sweetish, fruity /plums, banana, peach jam, apricots/, coffee, caramel, perfume. I caught and the smell of baked fruit cake, as well as fragrance of orange peels. Taste – honey, light peat, bitterness and spiciness, cake and dried fruits, with a very slight woody note. Finish – medium, honey, vanilla, strong sweetness which progresses, fruit and vinous hints in the aftertaste.
In summary: delicious and fruity whisky, with specific finish, which I liked more than Scapa 12yo. My advice – do not hesitate and try it if you have a chance.
