Oban 14 y.o. single malt whisky
Almost imperceptibly, we are heading to the final of the series with Scotch whisky themed reviews. Before jump over the ocean and take the portion of good-quality bourbon, I got a few more malts from Scotland for you. The turn came for Oban 14 y.o. single malt whisky.
The distillery is named after the town which its adorns and was founded in 1793 by Hugh, but not Laurie, and John Stevenson, which situated it on the Kintyre Peninsula with a stunning sea view, as the building rises in the town itself. The annual production is about 670,000 litres and almost all of this is matured and bottled as single malt Scotch whisky, while the rest of it is directed to Diageo’s blends. Samples of Oban can be found also in a volume of 200 ml as a part of the so called „Classic Malts Selection“. Except this particular handsome, on the market can also be seen 18-year-old and 32-year-old distillate, as well as special selection of whisky, named „Distiller`s edition“. So far, I have come across such of ’95, ’96 and ’98, however I haven’t had the opportunity to try them yet /I think they were available in Tobacco bar/. So, if anyone has had the chance to taste them, let’s share his impressions.
Now back to the liquid in front of me, which either because of the magic embedded in it or because of the pleasant mood at the end of the workday, but seems quite appetizing. The aroma is pleasant, malt and honey, bearing a hint of smokiness, black tea, light bitterness and spiciness, tobacco and caramel. The whisky is with alcohol content of 43%, so it allows a drop or two of water. After its addition the aroma of honey becomes stronger, the peat flavour stands out, as I caught and scent of something that I liken to glaze of cake /not fruity/. The taste is honey, spicy and bitter, accompanied by the memory of the used peat and something that reminds me of delicious toast. With water it becomes more sweetish, but the bitterness also increases. The finish is of medium length with perceptible sweetish malt and toasted flavor.
Assessment: 89/100. Price: about 80 lv. I recommend it. 🙂
