“The Teacher” – Teacher’s Highland Cream blended whisky
After the recent reviews of single malt whiskey, I decided to introduce you my thoughts and feelings about the familiar „Teacher’s Highland Cream“. „Teacher’s“ is one of the most popular whiskeys in Bulgaria and supposedly has its fans, who are far more familiar with its story than me. Therefore, the historical review will be limited to a few facts.
It is produced in Glasgow. The brand was registered in 1884. William Teacher did produce whisky long before this, using as a starting point his wife’s grocery shop. After Teacher’s death his sons took over the business. What does impress me? This blend is characterized by a strong „Islay“ presence and golden color. Besides the aroma of single malts used for its blending, most prominent are the typical scents of the region – intrusive, seaside, iodine and medical. According to data, the single malt presence is about 45%, including 30 different kinds of malt. And not to mislead you, I checked which one predominates. This is Ardmore single malt, owned by Teacher’s. The special about it is that Ardmore is Highland whisky, but with exceptional presence of peat, which makes its taste very similar to those of Islay goodies. The grain distillate somewhat mitigates its „island“ taste. Light bitterness is also perceptible. The finish is short, peaty, with the expected island notes and sweetness by the contained grain whiskey. Assessment: 2,9/6. I have already shared my opinion about island whiskies, which definitely aren’t for my taste and so this has influence on the low assessment. In conclusion, for those who like the taste of „Teacher’s“, I recommend to taste also the single malts of the Islay region /Bowmore, Lagavulin, laphroaig, Talisker, Ardbeg, Caol Ila and etc., or single „Highlander“ Ardmore/, which have this particular seaside, strongly peaty and iodine spirit.
